Ask and Ye Shall Receive

If you are new around here, then I want to fill you in on an awesome score of FREE doors I picked up from a Church Renovation.  You can read all about that HERE.

This little church is the oldest church in my town, it was built in the early 1940’s, post World War II from an old military building.  They added onto it over the years, but it never received a full remodel until now.

I drive right past this church almost every day.  After spotting these first two doors, I kept my eyes open for more. Just last week I noticed another 2 doors next to the construction dumpster. Last Friday I stopped by and asked if I could take these as well.  They were so thrilled I was helping them get rid of “stuff” and actually reuse it that they asked me to come back Monday to get 2 more.

Monday morning rolled around. I stopped by to pick up my doors and deliver some cookies for the crew.  Not only did they have the two, they had 3 more, with two more to follow soon!  This makes a total of 9 FREE DOORS!!!

I know much of this huge score was due to sheer luck. But here are a few things that don’t hurt when looking to score quality free things.

    • When out running errands, keep your eyes open for businesses that are being renovated.  Often the construction manager will be happy to give you architectural pieces they are ripping out. Saves them extra weight at the dump!
    • Be gracious when offered something free.  Ask if they would like some cookies, muffins, or something else in return.  Remember, it is usually (not always!) a bunch of men at these sites.  They eat subpar doughnuts every morning (I have seen the evidence).  A plate of something home baked goes a long way in showing gratitude.
    • Be sure to let them know what you are doing with the pieces, or what you do in general, and leave them with your business card.
  • Stop back occasionally, even if you don’t see anything out.  Chances are they have something on hand, and will be happy to see it go.

I almost feel guilty (almost, not quite) in landing such a bounty of free stuff.  I have such fun plans for them, I can’t wait to begin.  Looking forward to sharing them with you as I REDOUX each of them!!

Oh yes, and on that same morning?  I scored this next to a dumpster:

Yes, this is actually a solid, Uber cool work bench.  It has a very well seasoned stainless steel top on it.  This is going in my house. Hopefully that coming soon too!

I am certain my luck will be running out shortly.  Either that, or room in my garage and the side of my house.  Happy Junking!

Holy Moly Girl! What are you going to do with all those doors? I was lucky enough to find 3 right across the street when they were renovating a very old house. I used 2 for desk tops and 1 for my workbench….
And that table is to die for! You would pay a lot of money for that in some catalog stores!
    Great for you!

I’m jealous of your door scores! I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for furniture left by dumpsters. My husband gets frustrated sometimes because I’ll shout out and he’ll think I’m shouting about an oncoming car or something… Oops. 🙂

Score! Nice finds. I recently came into several antique doors on Craigslist for FREE! I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the ad. I love that bench … pure awesomeness!
