How to Create a Whitewashed look Plus the Toughest Finish

How to create that Whitewashed Denim look.  Plus!  Get the toughest finish for your painted furniture, 100% Naturally of course, using CeCe Caldwell’s Products.  (Some of these products may no longer be available from CeCe Caldwells)

Here is a product list of what I recommend using my all new favorite 100% Natural Debi’s Design Diary DIY Paint.  It’s a Clay Based Paint, the only one of the market like it.  Every color is highly pigmented, doesn’t really need stirring.  It goes on like Velvet.  There is no Latex or Acrylic so it won’t seize up on you and it dries hard as rock, yet has a beautiful smooth feel.  It also bonds with just about any surface you paint it on.

You will need Deb’s Design Diary Crystal Clear Liquid Patina, White Swan Paint and DIY Paint’s 100% Natural Clear Wax.

This was how the table looked before.  Cute, but I was ready for a change from the Country Chippy look.  We wanted something a little more updated to go with our eclectic decor.

Let’s get started.  Mix the Dover White Wash (which is a CeCe Caldwell’s paint base, with no pigment added).  For this project, I used a 1:4 ratio.  Check out my how to video:

Now that the glaze has dried, you will want to protect that finish from scratches and spills.  I used CeCe Caldwell’s 100% Natural Flat Matte, 3 coats.  The EASIEST finish to brush on.  When all 3 coats were dry, I used CeCe Caldwell’s 100% Natural Waxing Cream.

Now check out this video to see how easy it was to get that tough, durable finish.  Check out how I spill Diet Pepsi on it (Not an endorsement 😉 and my dog jumps on it!  No need to worry about scratches or spills, this finish can take it.

Have you tried DIY Paints and Products?  If not, why not? No Latex, no acrylic, they are 100% Safe to use inside.  No chemicals, no yucky stuff, just all natural goodness.  Even the cans are 100% recyclable and everything is 100% American Made.

Just like my Coffee Table.  Built locally from reclaimed wood.  Now finished with a relaxed Whitewashed Denim look and the toughest Finish.

Now for the winner! Congratulations Darren Stokes!!

Can I use this finish if I have used Annie Sloan wax on the table top? Thank you Elaine

Hi Elaine, it is not recommended to use any liquid clear coat of any brand over a wax finis of any brand. The exception could be made if the wax has dried and cured for at least 60 days. As a rule of thumb, wax is always your last finish.

A note about Annie Sloane Wax. It is a high quality furniture wax, very similar to fine European brands. However, I would NEVER use Annie Sloane wax inside. The main ingredient in it is Naphta, a known Carcinogen with links to cancer. The can of Annie Sloane wax itself has a Hasmat label on it and it must be shipped as a hazardous product. Annie Sloane Stockists are required to take an additional safety handling class just for the wax. When it is used, make sure the area is well ventilated. Do a quick internet search and you can easily find the MSDS sheet of exactly what is in Annie Sloane wax. It is 75-85% Naphta. There have been numerous documented cases of people with Asthma, allergies, breathing issues, etc. having bad reactions to Annie Sloane wax when working with it regularly. Furthermore, it can cause headaches, irritation to your nose and throat, and in some cases, nausea, dizziness and vomiting. Prolonged exposure to Naphta increases your risk of damage to your nervous system and liver.

This is why the only wax I will ever use are the CeCe Caldwell’s Waxes. They are 100% Natural, contain no irritants, they are durable and even smell really lovely. The ingredients are listed on each can, the same for all their products.

We unknowingly expose ourself to literally 1,000s of chemicals a day that are not studied for human impact. Most paints and finishes on the market are loaded with chemicals that long term exposur has not even documented yet. Using 100% Natural CeCe Caldwell’s products are just one of dozens of reasons I primarily use only their products.

Sorry for the long answer. Short answer, use another product, especially paint and wax at your own risk. 😉
